Legally Blonde | Pretty, Pink, and Feminist!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Rewatching Legally Blonde was the perfect throwback to an era where romantic comedies were predictable, high budget, and polished enough that you can understand why people would go to theatres to see them. Legally Blonde stands out against modern rom-coms because it doesn’t seek to be anything other than what it promises: a fun, women-led story with a likeable main character. Elle Woods’ (Reese Witherspoon) story of overcoming bias and achieving dreams she didn’t know she could have is relatable for everyone, regardless of whether or not one has faced similar obstacles in their own life.

Looking at the film through a post-#MeToo lens brings into question how those around Elle would react if put in similar situations today. Would Vivian (Selma Blair) be so quick to accuse Elle of using sex appeal to get ahead? Would there be a bigger resistance when Elle reveals she’d rather quit law school than continue to work with someone who sexually harassed her? The actions of the characters feel realistic yet important for they show the audience the value of accepting others and bringing kindness to situations before passing judgement. Those who judge Elle for her femininity are not villainized but rather shown the error of their ways while Elle simultaneously learns how to go beyond initial charm in order to succeed in life.

This is the ultimate desert island, guilty pleasure movie and we can’t wait to watch the sequel!

Jess would pair this film with a bunch of Lip Smackers (you know, those awful flavoured ones that you kind of want to eat?) and Nick would pair it with some pink, sparkly ginger beer, some Swedish Berries and Fuzzy Peaches, popcorn, and pink lady apples.
