It’s been a while since either of us have written a review. That should tell you two things: we’ve been incredibly busy and this movie was so noteworthy I had to write something immediately to process the experience of watching it. What a way to end the festival year.

When Marnie Was There is a delightful masterpiece. Every frame feels purposeful and is so exquisite that you could print it out and frame it for your wall. It’s absolutely worth the watch, if for no other reason than it will transport you to an idyllic waterside village in a time when leaving your house is still not always possible.

The bones are there for a good story but Beauty Water doesn’t deliver. There is no inner beauty to be found, no lesson to be learned as the film navigates through this half-horror, half-romantic comedy. The fact that there was nothing about the protagonist that made her ugly in the first place is completely overlooked leaving us questioning what exactly we were supposed to feel as this story unfolded.
