Special Actors | So Weird Yet So Good

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Special Actors is, in a word, hilarious. This awkward, over-the-top comedy follows a young man as he attempts to earn money, infiltrate a cult, and overcome crippling anxiety. From that description alone we hope we’ve made it clear that Special Actors is anything but boring. Everything from the story to the camerawork screams “independent cinema” and we are here for it.

The concept of the film is nothing new — we discuss in the podcast below how we saw this idea executed both while we were in film school and on an episode of Brooklyn 99. But what Special Actors brings to the table is a strong sense of comedy and a flair for the unexpected. We’re treated to a title sequence mid-way through the film, flashbacks that aren’t flashbacks, multiple fight scenes, and a couple of twists that make an already strange scenario even more so. It’s all so enjoyable; the perfect palette cleanser if you’re looking for something silly yet still well done.
