27 Dresses | I'm Falling Asleep Just Thinking About This Movie

★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Ahh 2008… a simpler time for rom-coms. Back when trailers were guided by deep voice-overs and screenwriters could plug the latest hot celebrities into the same script over and over and continuously see box office success. There's something wonderful to be said about these classics.

And a classic this is. 27 Dresses is the kind of film we thought of as the perfect rom-com for years. At least, until we watched it. The film stars late-2000s rom-com queen Katherine Heigel as Jane alongside James Marsden as... well, it doesn't matter. What matters is that this film promises and fails to deliver on everything one would expect from a rom-com: formulaic plots, silly escapades, and delightful misfortune. Instead, audiences can expect nonsensical and unrealistic plots that take so long to drag from one scene to the next that the film feels like it takes weeks rather than hours to watch.

What makes 27 Dresses a bad movie isn't that it's predictable or that it loves its tropes. The film is bad because unlike other rom-coms of this era, the characters are very flat and the script just isn't funny. Considering this came from a screenwriter who penned The Devil Wears Prada, our expectations were exceptionally high and simply were not met. Rather than wasting time watching 27 Dresses, we'd recommend putting on just about any other movie.

No, seriously. Almost anything else will be better than this.

Jessica recommends pairing this with something just as spicy and lively as the film (aka unsalted saltine crackers, a piece of bread, and some lukewarm water). Nick recommends pairing it with a scientist so we can have some chemistry, bay-bee!
